Faculty Governance and Roberts Rules of Order

PRESENTED BY: Julie Woodworth, Nursing and Allied Health and Gail Tylec, FRCAE/Science, Health and Mathematics

Faculty Governance — Please join us for our topic of faculty governance in higher education referring to the structures and processes through which faculty, professional staff, administration, and staff participate in the development of policies and in decision-making that affect the institution. It is the systematic interaction among the faculty, committee representatives, and administration in the development of policies at the college. Processes are codified in the bylaws of the Faculty Senate. The process of faculty governance may be facilitated by standing committees, task forces, and ad hoc committees, as well as by faculty during open forum opportunities. Motions, resolutions, and rules of order will be reviewed at this session.

Roberts Rules of Order — A guide for conducting meetings and making decisions as a group. The purpose of the book is "to enable assemblies of any size, with due regard for every member's opinion, to arrive at the general will on the maximum number of questions of varying complexity in a minimum amount of time and under all kinds of internal climate ranging from total harmony to hardened or impassioned division of opinion.” Come learn some of the basics of these Rules of Order that you can use to facilitate effective meetings!
